In 1975, the legendary Bill Russell became head coach of the Sonics, and took them to their first NBA play-offs. They won their first, and only, NBA Championship in 1979 under coach Bob Hopkins. Some of the most iconic names associated with the Sonics are Shawn Kemp and Gary 'The Glove' Payton, who were drafted to the team in the late 80's / early 90's. More recently, the Sonics drafted Kevin Durant, who went on to become a league MVP in 2014 under the newer Thunder franchise name.
