Doc Rivers Signs 3-Year Deal with LA Clippers June 24, 2013 09:27

Doc Rivers has signed a 3-year, $21 million contract with the LA Clippers, after weeks of negotiations, it has been reported. The NBA still has to approve the deal, but it's thought that there won't be a problem.

There has been a lot of talk recently about what sort of movements will be happening between the Boston Celtics, and the Clippers, or in the Clippers camp itself, if this move happened.

Over the weekend, the Clippers gave up their 2015 first-round draft pick, and that reportedly sped up decision making with the Celtics and Rivers. Another big talking point has been that of whether Chris Paul will be staying with the Clippers for this next NBA season. Again, reports say that Paul was instrumental in lobbying for Rivers to make the move to LA, and although he hasn't committed to a further contract with the Clippers yet, Doc was unlikely to sign without knowing that he'd be coaching Paul.

Celtics forward, Kevin Garnett, was also part of the talks initially, although players can't be involved in a actual coaching transactions, but it was thought that KG would want to make the move to LA to stay with Rivers, in what could be one of the last seasons of his career.

Now things don't look so clear. Garnett has two years left on his $24.4 million contract with the Celtics, and it's rumoured that he's likely to play another season with the Celtics, then retire and perhaps make his way back to his former team, the Minnesota Timberwolves, for some kind of off-court ownership position.

That's just speculation, and we'll have to see what happens now that Doc has put pen to paper with the Clippers.

Former Clippers head coach, Alvin Gentry, is also in the mix to be part of Rivers' coaching staff in LA, although Gentry is also a candidate to be the new head coach at the Memphis Grizzlies, or perhaps join Mike D'Antoni at the Lakers as part of their coaching staff.

Either way, there's still a long way to go before the NBA season tips-off again, and no doubt there are going to be trade rumours, and actual moves-a-plenty in the coming months. Let the games begin!
