OKC's Russell Westbrook Signs Multi-Year Deal with Jordan Brand October 12, 2012 14:13
After the recent departure of Dwayne Wade from Jordan Brand, there was a clear hole there to be filled.
It has now been reported that Russell Westbrook, of the Oklahoma City Thunder, has joined Jordan Brand, and may well be the star that they have been looking for.
Sales of Wade's shoes were slow with Jordan, which may partly be why he has made the move to Chinese brand Li Ning, but also begs the question as to whether Wade was really the right fit for Jordan.
Russell Westbrook had a monster start to his season in 2010-11, and undoubtedly continued to work on his game throughout last season, helping his team to the NBA Championship Finals where they were finally stopped by the Miami Heat. As a continually rising star, he may bring an edge back to the Jordan Brand.
Having signed a multi-year endorsement with Jordan Brand, it's going to be interesting to see what kicks Westbrook will take to the court in next season.
Michael Jordan has been quoted as saying, “We are very excited to welcome Russell to the Jordan family. Russell’s style, both on and off the court, combined with his love and dedication to the game make him a perfect fit for the Jordan Brand. We love the drive and passion for basketball that Russell brings.”
Westbrook became a shoe 'free agent' this Summer, and had a number of choices in terms of which brand he could go forward with. Adidas came close to nabbing him, but he'll be lining up with the likes of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Jared Sullinger as the new star face of Jordan Brand.
