We've now got the first weekend of BBL action well and truly under our belts, and what a start it has been. It's been great to see some familiar faces in action around the league again this year, but also fantastic to see some new blood on the court.
Here are the scores from the games from Friday, through to Sunday:
Friday 21st September
Newcastle Eagles 72 - 65 Glasgow Rocks
Sheffield Sharks 55 - 71 Leicester Riders
Manchester Giants 85 - 84 London Lions
Saturday 22nd September
Worcester Wolves 76 - 82 Durham Wildcats
Surrey Heat 106 - 45 Mersey Tigers
Sunday 23rd September
Durham Wildcats 82 - 92 Glasgow Rocks
London Lions 72 - 88 Newcastle Eagles
The BBL website took the action from each of these games, and pieced together their team of the week based on individual players performance.
For the first week of the season, the team looks a little something like this:
John Fraley (Leicester Riders)
Fraley made his first appearance in the British Basketball League against the Sheffield Sharks on Friday, and what a debut it was. Fraley put up 21 points, which included a record of 10 from 13 inside. He added an impressive 11 rebounds to get his BBL career off to a start with a double-double.
Sam Cricelli (Surrey Heat)
Another player making a debut this weekend was Sam Cricelli, who took to the floor for the Surrey Heat, for the first time, in their game against the Mersey Tigers. Cricelli also racked up a double-double in his first game with 21 points and 10 rebounds, along with 4 assists and 3 steals. His energy on the court was a large part of the reason that the Tigers just couldn't keep up with the pace, and went down with a 106 - 45 loss to open their season.
Gareth Murray (Glasgow Rocks)
Murray rocks his way into the BBL Team of the week after helping his team to their first win of the season. After defeat in Newcastle on Friday, the Glaswegian team were back in the North East on Sunday to play the Durham Wildcats. Murray finished the game with 20 points, after knocking down 4 out of 6 three-pointers and adding to that with 3 of 5 from inside. Again he's another player that earned himself a double-double with 11 rebounds in a performance that proves that he could be a difficult player to guard.
James Jones (Manchester Giants)
The Manchester Giants made their league debut with a narrow win over the London Lions, but it must feel good to get that first W under your belt. Jones is a bit of veteran when it comes to team of the week having put up some impressive performances when he was with the Mersey Tigers, and also the Plymouth Raiders. In his first game with the Giants, he managed to put up 29 points, helped by hitting 5 three-pointers, making 6 of 7 from inside and stuffing the stat sheet with a further 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists.
Chavis Holmes (Surrey Heat)
The second Heat player to make it into this team line-up is Chavis Holmes, who made his BBL debut in his teams brutal destruction of the Mersey Tigers. Working things from the point, Holmes narrowly missed out on a double-double, coming away with 15 points and 9 assists. He also had 6 rebounds to complete a nice all-round performance.
Stay tuned for more BBL action this week, and to see who makes the BBL team of the week after next weekend.
