GB Women Narrowly Lose to France in Penultimate Olympic Group Game August 03, 2012 22:01

Tonight is a proud night for women's basketball in the UK. Team GB, who are ranked 49th in the world, fought it out against 8th ranked France in the Olympics tonight, and came out with only a narrow 3 point loss in a thrilling overtime game.

Coming into the competition, people were doubtful about how successful the women's GB squad could be against some of the giants of women's basketball, but this group of ladies has really done their country proud.

Not only have they given France a run for their money, but earlier in the week they kept up Russia, who are ranked 2nd in the world, losing by just 6 points at the Olympic basketball arena. Jo Leedham led all scorers with 29 points, making some vital baskets in the dying minutes of regular time to keep GB in the game.

Julie Page also had a good game, sinking a 3 near the end of the 4th to really boost the British women. With just 6 seconds left on the game clock, Celine Dumerc hit a 3 for France, tying the game at 67 a piece and taking it into overtime. Page went to the free throw line with 10 seconds left on the clock, making 1 from 2 to tie the game at 77.

However, Dumerc again launched down to the other end of the court, and threw up a 3 that put France ahead 80 - 77, with only 0.2 seconds left on the clock. Team GB took a time out, and drew up a play to put the ball in the hands of Chantelle Handy to go for one final 3 to tie the game again. Handy hit the 3, but not before the buzzer called time and this extraordinary game came to a close.

Team GB have just one game remaining in the Olympic group stages, against Brazil on Sunday.
