Steve Nash Signs with the LA Lakers July 05, 2012 20:34

Steve Nash has signed with the LA Lakers today in a shock trade that will let him stay close to his children, while chasing an NBA Championship with Kobe Bryant.

Nash had been in talks with teams like the New York Knicks and the Toronto Raptors, but LA came in at the last minute to steal one of the best point guards that the league has to offer.

The Phoenix Suns had initially been reluctant to make a trade with LA, as they would have to reach a sign-and-trade deal to facilitate the move, but Nash made it clear that, despite being offered more money to go to Toronto, it was important for him to stay near his children, making the LA the better choice to meet his personal aims.

The Lakers have agreed a three-year, $27 million contract with Nash and the Suns receive four draft picks, along with $3 million dollars. They will get both a first round and second round pick in the 2013 draft, then a second round pick in 2014, followed by a first round pick in 2015.

At 38 years of age, Nash is a two-time league MVP, but he has never won an NBA Championship. With time running out, it was always going to be important for Nash to go somewhere that has the potential to add a Championship to his CV.

If the current LA Lakers line-up stays pretty much the same, with Bryant, P. Gasol and Bynum then the 2012/13 season is going to be a really interesting one in terms of offence and the on-court dynamic for the Lakers.
