Andrew Thomson Leaves Newcastle Eagles for French Club La Rochelle June 25, 2012 14:37

Newcastle Eagles fans will undoubtedly be dismayed to hear the news that power forward, Andrew Thomson, has left the club to join French team, La Rochelle.

Thomson was a new addition to the Eagles last season, helping them to take a clean sweep of all four trophies. The season before that, he had seen success with the Mersey Tigers, having won the BBL league title under former Tigers coach, Tony Garbelloto.

Last season, Thomson averaged 14.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, and it was well known that Eagles player-coach Fab Flournoy was keen to keep this big man around.

It had been rumoured that Thompson might make a move to the Manchester Giants, who are going to be new to the BBL in the 2012/13 season and play in Thompson's home town.

When interviewed by the Manchester Evening News about his move to La Rochelle and their ambitions to move up from third tier French basketball, Thomson was quoted as saying; "It's an exciting move…It is good to get back into Europe and should be a good experience. They have come up from the division below and want to go up again."

Last month, the Newcastle Eagles announced that their star 3-point shooter, Joe Chapman, would be coming back to Tyneside next season and with the London 2012 Olympics closing in, they're undoubtedly keen to tighten up the roster for next year as soon as possible.
