Deng's £300,000 Insurance Bill To Play In The Olympics May 28, 2012 18:03
Luol Deng has confirmed he wants to play for Great Britain at this years Olympics, but the huge cost of insuring him for the games could potentially cripple Britain's basketball governing body.
Reports have been circulating that the insurers are demanding around £300,000 for the Chicago Bulls star to play for Team GB. British Basketball chiefs have said they will cover the cost of his insurance, but have stated that they will have to make "sacrifices to all our other programmes if we are to make this happen."
Deng has come under fire from his NBA team this last week, after deciding to play for Team GB this summer, rather than undergo surgery on his injured wrist.
British Basketball performance director Chris Spice said. "We admire and support his stance. Luol is a true professional and manages his body extremely well, as shown by the high amount of minutes he was able to play for his club after sustaining the injury in January this year"
"The insurance to cover Luol is always expensive due to his high value...His wrist situation will make this exorbitant premium even more expensive and we will have to make sacrifices to all our other programmes if we are to make this happen. It is difficult, but there is only one Luol Deng and there is only one London 2012 Olympic Games"
