London's O2 Area To Host Euroleague Finals in 2013 and 2014 May 15, 2012 13:55

It has been announced that London's O2 Arena is to host the 2013 and 2014 Euroleague final fours, Europe's biggest basketball club event.

The 20,000 seat, world class arena, will play host to the best teams in Europe over the next two years.

The O2 is also being used during the London 2012 Olympics as a basketball venue, which will entertain Great Britain's basketball team, as well as juggernauts like Team USA and Spain.

Chief Executive of the Euroleague, Jordi Bertomeu, told the BBC, "We're trying to help the growth of basketball in the UK and this is one of the ways we can make a contribution."

"In London, we have an amazing building in the O2. When we are deciding cities, it's a combination of the venues and the infrastructure. I'm sure the fans will come."

The decision to use the O2 was made before Olympiacos' 62-61 victory over CSKA Moscow, in the Euroleague Final, in Istanbul.

Bertomeu hopes that bringing the Euroleague finals to London will help raise the sport profile in the country, which does not currently have any club teams playing in Europe.
