The Associated Press has today announced that Tyson Chandler, of the New York Knicks, will receive this year's NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, ending Dwight Howard's 3 year winning streak.
The award will be officially announced later this week, with Chandler likely to be handed his trophy on Thursday night, before game 3 of the playoffs between the Knicks and the Miami Heat.
Chandler has averaged 11.3 points, shooting 67.9 percent from the field, 9.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game this season. He is the first ever Knicks player to win this award.
The 7ft1 centre helped the Dallas Mavericks to win an NBA Championship last season, before becoming a free agent and signing with the Knicks. He has primarily been given the award on the basis of just how much he has helped turn the Knicks around this season, with the team finishing 7th in the Eastern Conference.
