Last night, Eagles fans were looking very pleased for themselves, as it was announced that the Newcastle Eagles are the official winners of the BBL Championship for the 2011/2012 season.
The Eagles played the second place Worcester Wolves last Friday, in a nail-biter at Sports Central, to ensure that they were that much closer to winning the title. The decisive game however, was played last night, and didn't even involve the Eagles.
The Leicester Riders beat the Plymouth Raiders, 96-72, meaning that no one can now catch the Newcastle Eagles in the league standings.
They Plymouth Raiders have stood in the Eagles way of all 3 of the trophies that they have won so far this season, and each time the Eagles have come out on top. The championship win being no different.
The Eagles are now just one trophy away from a clean sweep for the season, an achievement that has evaded them since their clean sweep of 2006.
Paul Blake, the Managing Director of the Eagles was quoted by the BBL as saying, “I am very proud of what the team has achieved this year. They have had to dig deep and have won more close games than I can remember, but have managed to get over the line. It’s an amazing bounce back following last season and I am very pleased for Fab, the team and most importantly the supporters.”
Newcastle are next in action this Friday, against the Mersey Tigers, where fans and players alike can celebrate the third trophy win of the season.
