Dwight Howard Sets NBA Record for Free Throw Attempts January 13, 2012 18:57
In Orlando's 117 - 109 victory against the Golden State Warriors last night, Dwight Howard broke Wilt Chamberlain's 50 year old NBA record for most free throws attempted in a game. Howard made 21 of the record 39 attempts from the line.
On orders from Golden State coach Mark Jackson, the Warriors intentionally fouled Howard throughout the game. Frustrating the big man and sending him to the line time and time again. Howard started the game shooting only 42% from the line for the season.
“I just tried to be aggressive and get to the line. I didn’t care if I missed 30,” Howard said. “I was still going to go up there and shoot the next one with confidence.”
Howard ended the game with 45 points, 23 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocked shots, leading the Magic to its third straight win.
After the game Magic guard J.J. Redick quipped, “It’s amazing that he made 21”.
The game lasted 2 hours, 39 minutes.
