EuroBasket 2011 Takes to the Court in Lithuania August 29, 2011 20:26

eurobasket 2011EuroBasket 2011 starts this week, and it set to be a fantastic display of European Basketball action as 24 European Teams battle it out for the title.

Things kick off on Wednesday the 31st with Spain vs Poland, Turkey vs Portugal and Lithuania vs Great Britain.

The European Basketball Championship, which is shortened to EuroBasket, will take place in Lithuania this year, and will be the 37th Championship organised by FIBA Europe.

This will be the second time that Lithuania have hosted the event, and the first time since it was given it's independence in 1990, having last hosted in 1939.

A lot will be at stake for the teams taking part in this years Championship, as the top two teams in the tournament are guaranteed a place at the 2012 London Olympics.

Favourites for the competition amongst the Basketball Megastore team are Spain, Lithuania, France and Germany, with lots of international basketball stars joining their home nation line-ups for the event.

Spain have a solid line up including, NBA stars Pau Gasol, his brother Marc Gasol, Oklahoma City Thunder star Serge Ibaka and the recently signed Timberwolves rookie Ricky Rubio.

France are sporting San Antonio Spurs player Tony Parker, Chicago Bulls' Joakim Noah, Ronny Turiaf and Nicolas Batum who both also play in the NBA.

Germany has recent NBA Playoff winner Dirk Nowitzki and Lithuania have Darius Songaila.
