London 2012 Olympic Basketball Test Event to Start Today August 16, 2011 14:43

The London International Basketball Invitational meeting starts today at the brand new Olympic Basketball arena, at the London Olympic Park in Stratford.

The Great Britain squad will face stiff competition in the tournament, from the likes of Serbia, Australia, France, China and Croatia. GB's first game is due to start today at 2030 BST against France.

The six day invitational will be used to test the arena and transport links, going to and from the site. It will be the first time members of the public will be able to watch sport at the main 2012 games site.

The 12,000 seater basketball arena is one of the largest temporary venues ever used for an Olympics, the arena is located right next to the Athletes' Village in the Olympic Park.

The arena will be dismantled after the Games to be reused elsewhere at other UK and overseas events.

Three games will be played each day at the following times, 1530, 1800 and 2030, all at BST. Friday will be a rest day for all six teams involved in the invitational.

NBA and GB star, Luol Deng, will miss the first three games of the test event because he has commitments at his annual basketball camp in Loughborough.

The Great Britain squad are currently preparing for EuroBasket 2011, which begins in Lithuania on 31st August.
